Chocolate Pie Diner Style
January 5, 2009
OK so i made this for Thanksgiving along with pumpkin pie and this one was eaten in seriously, less than a day. It comes from Miss Martha Stewart and it is Ah-may-zing!
I use a couple shortcuts. First she wants you to make the crust by hand. Forget that! Just buy a Oreo or chocolate graham cracker crust and its done.
Just stick it in the freezer while you make the pie. The pie does include alcohol which you can omit if you like. Or try it with a different kind of liquor. We have made it kid friendly and I also made it with kahula which was nice.
# FOR THE FILLING
# 1/2 cup sugar
# 3 tablespoons chocolate malt Ovaltine
# 1 teaspoon salt
# 1/4 cup cornstarch
# 5 large egg yolks
# 2 cups whole milk
# 1/2 cup heavy cream
# 5 ounces dark chocolate (60 to 70 percent cacao), coarsely chopped
# 2 teaspoons whiskey
# 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
Make the filling: In a medium saucepan, whisk together sugar, Ovaltine, salt, and cornstarch. Add egg yolks and whisk until combined; mixture will look like a thick paste. Slowly pour in milk and cream, whisking constantly. Bring to a boil over medium heat, whisking constantly; let boil for 30 seconds and immediately remove from heat.
Add chocolate, whiskey, and vanilla; whisk until well combined and mixture has cooled slightly. Let stand, at room temperature, for 15 minutes. If a thin skin forms on the filling while cooling, whisk until skin is gone. Remove pie crust from freezer and pour filling into the crust. Refrigerate for 4 hours before serving.
Serve with whipped cream.

Ovaltine has a use outside the cribbage and dinner at 4pm crowd?! Never in a million years would I have thought to put Ovaltine in a pie.
For a minute I thought you used kahula to make it kid-friendly, and I was cracking up.
There is allegedly a kahula plant in town-the only one in the US-but I could be wrong. Or rather, wiki could.
Chocolate pie–give it!
Just passing by.Btw, your website have great content!
